m'lady on vanilla WoW pvp: "it's fun for a little bit, but there's nothing to it"

can we get Blizzard to add this as a selling point in their marketing materials? thanks

The PvE rly is addictive though. I haven't neckbearded like I did these past two months in years. Tanking Baron Rivendare was more engaging than fighting BiS-geared players who don't understand how Disarm works. Dude hits like a fucking truck.

I don't have the opportunity to stop anyone from raiding MC. I am level 52. People have Sulfuras already. It's too late. They win the PvE race. And now if I want to go raid to try and be marginally less disadvantaged, I have to deal with them locking me out of content. That's not hardcore PvP. That's hardcore PvE for people who want to rush content and then want to occasionally flex their PvE might against and/or cockblock weaker opponents. The idea doesn't bother me because I don't want to PvE either way, so I am in the same boat. But it sucks for people that don't want to powergrind and actually get to do shit. PDM locked Discordia out of content for literally years until most of the high-ranking members quit or broke down and joined them. It's not because PDM were so good at PvP that they just couldn't ever lose.

I get why you like it. But it's niche. It's not catering to carebear casuals because they don't want the biggest dorks to get to dictate what everyone else gets to do. If they could figure out a way to do it without it not being a PvE race, then I think more people would be into it.

PvP is in Vanilla is "pointless" except for fun. I like it as much, or more, than EQ because people actually want to fight back and more people actually know what they are doing (especially on this server).

I get why you don't enjoy the zergy, die-12-times-in-row-and-who-cares style of pvp. HOWEVER, there are tons of good players on this server, and we routinely get wrecked. It doesn't lack for any challenge. It just doesn't mean anything when we die.

Zone plugging and zoning away where people cant be touched is the same thing for me personally. If you made someone plug or zone you've won the fight, you just dont get the satisfaction of sending them to the GY or bind point. WoW pvp is fast paced enough you can actually get kill shots on people before they get a chance to run off most of the time.

EQ did restrict how you played in my opinion. Mechanic wise (things like charm and fear being removed from pvp targets altogether) as well as putting the "play nice policy" in which was awful. Anytime I engaged someone that was fighting mobs I was instantly reported and had to deal with a GM.

I probably would have liked a sullen zek rule set server much more but I had already been banned/quit by that time. This is the only server I'd say had unrestricted pvp.

WoW has some major flaws as well but I like their "it's a pvp server, find a pvp solution" stance on things. They usually dont cater to the cry babies that joined a pvp server and cry about pvp

I killed players fighting mobs constantly and never got a word from a GM. Got banned for training once but that was like 1 out of 50 times.

It's more like "it's a pvp server, but we'll make damn sure to try to force you to play the game in a way that is minimally invasive to our casual players". There is no solution for most of the restrictions. You're never going to be able to attack someone in Orgrimmar.

My solution in neutral cities was to just get beat on by guards and kill players anyway. Problem is I just don't care that much when I kill a player in WoW. I've killed hundreds of players already and I can't name one of them. They might as well have been NPCs. A lot of them didn't fight back.

I hardly ever had that problem in EQ. Nobody wanted to die in that game because it actually had consequence, so players would either fight you or make a genuine effort to escape. I'd regularly get a neckbeard adrenaline rush from it that I've never felt while pvping in WoW. Closest thing to it in WoW would be the first time we tried killing Emperor in BRD.

also I like being able to talk to the players I fight, and not just to spam them with trash talk or laugh at their nerd rage

This genre is supposed to be immersive and social. I befriended and developed rivalries with people in EQ because I was allowed to talk to them.

I ran into more players emoting me instead of fighting back in WoW in one day than I did in 3 years of playing EQ, so I dunno where you're getting these tryhards from. Death meaning something goes a long way.

I know you guys enjoy it regardless, so I'll stop yelling at clouds now.

Glass half full here, at least the game has some form of pvp in it. Better than a lot of modern MMOs.

I haven't had anyone emote me other then /spit and /rude occasionally.

I've been told I need to go back to retail by horde players several times though.

If you didnt enjoy it the first time around you probably wont enjoy it this time around either. Nothing wrong with that man.

I hate PvE but I try to force myself to do it because unfortunately its necessary. Fighting scripted events that have 1 or 2 mechanics to follow while i press 2 buttons isnt a whole lot of fun for me. I should have known better when I picked a paladin but oh well, too late now. I raided MC once in vanilla and that was enough for me. Different strokes for different folks.

Play the game the way you enjoy it the most

needs to have built in RNG and a short lifespan so neckshaves can win too

    EverQuest + Rust

(but the grindy and immersive aspects of EQ, not just the fantasy element)

People stand still and emote spam, or just stand on their mounts, in WoW because their deaths are inevitable. If you jump a grey or we jack someone 4 v 1, there's literally nothing they can do. This isn't EverQuest where almost every CC bounces and you can reset/escape by running in a straight line. I think it has less to do with the severity of the death penalty and more to do with survivability. If people could getaway, or could reset a fight, they would.

The vast majority of our fights are easy, because the vast majority of our fights are jumping greys/greens or mobfucking people while we wait for more people to show up. But we also die multiple times every time. We get corpse camped every time. We get zerged, or out level/geared, or outplayed. I'm complete trash right now, and everyone else can improve a lot, too. It's not like we are effortlessly steamrolling everyone we meet. We lose a ton.

I don't think Vanilla WoW is a great PvP game. I think it's basically "ok". I just don't think EQ, or EQ-style solutions, are the objective answer either.

Dumped on some nerds in Southshore last night. Felt good when psychic scream landed on a higher level and I spammed laugh and ran away. Waited a few and dumped on them all over again until the high lvl logged back on and I laugh ran all over again.

All this talk about EQ and MUDs made me recall that I've still never tested Ultima Online. From what I recall that was actually intended to be a persistent world like Ut craved, but I'm not sure they ever managed to realize it.

    Holy shit, it's still around:

It's so dated it could almost pass for a modern retro game.

Where are you going to get this equal-level tryhard pvp?

I have trouble even finding people to fight, much less finding people who actually care about it. If I go to Azshara, I'll usually find a couple of warlocks camping the demons there. That fight goes like this: if I use Recklessness, I win. If that's on cooldown, then I get 10 seconds to kill them. If I don't get any crits during that time, they win. If I do, I win. That's every Warlock vs Warrior fight.

To me it is far less interesting than fighting Veenus in EQ, which was a grueling cat-and-mouse chase of trying to dump her levitate buff and pet while dispelling and LoS'ing spells. That was difficult, and of course I also actually cared about the outcome. I don't remember being able to escape any fights by "running in a straight line", either. I remember jumping into water, making the risky decision to run through mobs, or running erratically to shake off someone who had dispelled my movement speed buff. EQ not giving every class automatic positional abilities or multiple CC options meant you actually had to be on top of that. It was hard to "glue" to someone as a melee (stay within melee range no matter how much they spazzed out or tried to hill bug you) and I had to actively work at getting that down. A lot more than I do at my warrior in WoW, where the movement rarely requires actually moving your character (as opposed to clicking a button to automatically zipline to & stun a target) and environment rarely comes into play unless you're near an instance.

We can agree to disagree pal. Use EVE as a counterexample if you want - I don't really care about how people regard EQ.

In EVE, you lose everything when you die. The PvP cadence is the opposite of WoW: it's rare to fight and rarer to get a kill, but when it does happen, it matters. If WoW pvp is an action movie featuring 2 hours of explosions that have no effect on the plot, then EVE would be a movie that builds up to one explosion which dramatically alters the story.

To be fair, EQ did some very shitty ghosting issues going on, esp. with hills. Never really understood why that happened, some bug in their netcode?

had to be something with updating sloped movement collision or interpolation along that axis.

I like pvping with you guys when we're actually all online at the same time. There's not much else for big Shaq to do at this point. I'm completely fried on the PvE grinds.

I thought about trying to invent some arbitrary goal to make the pvp more interesting for myself, like picking a specific zone and trying to lock it down. I will give that another go if they've turned off layering.

Yeah I need someone to BoF as I kept doing it to myself when muk and I were pvping today. The pve grind sucks but when he and I go casually quest/pvp its alot of fun
