I don’t regret playing MMOs in a general sense - I met good people, learned a lot, spent less time in bars, and other common nerd rationalizations. But there’s a point where I realize that I put so much time into certain goals that it exceeded what a lot of people invest into graduate or professional degrees. And I also lost my temper like a hypercompetitive baby towards a lot of people that didn’t deserve it. Those things I regret.

This thread is about how much you do, or do not, regret various aspects of EQ and online gaming. It can also be about other non-video game related regrets.

I don’t want to hear about how you have no regrets, and all your mistakes were a learning experience that helped you become the man you are today. Nobody actually thinks that, and most of us are too stupid to have done anything right in our lives.

I actually think there is a lot of wisdom in that last sentence, or at the very least "regret" is a strong word. Decisions have to be evaluated in the context of your your age, background and overall knowledge of life. There are definitely lots of things I would have done differently, but I could also have made a lot of worse choices. We are to a large degree a product of our environment, especially through the intermediate goals and ambitions we adopt. So it's not that excessive time gaming was necessarily well-spent, but that it's expected for young people to not have their priorities straight yet and do stupid things.

So, in retrospect I could have sought higher-achieving company at a younger age and be further along in my career, but I didn't really have anything to compare against where I grew up.

I've seen you sometimes express disdain of older generations, so perhaps your "regret" stems from an optimistic view of how good decisions young people make? In my experience there is some merit to the saying that wisdom comes with age. Pushing close to 40 now, for each decade I realize how skewed my priorities and thinking was in the previous one. At some point it will just degenerate into the delusions of a senile mind, but it seems to hold true for now. You are what, at most 30ish and hold a post-graduate degree? You are too young for regrets imo, try to do better in the next decade :)

This is where I land on a lot of my time spent gaming.

I'd rather not dwell on regrets unless there's some constructive purpose to doing so, and I think you have to be realistic about what you could have been doing instead. Bemoaning "but I could have spent [this time I spent on a MMO after work] getting a graduate degree" is probably unrealistic.

I played EQ for three years when I was in high school. It would have been ideal if I had spent that time developing socially or getting a head start on a career, but that's not realistic. My father had cancer that was expected to kill him and I was bullied on a daily basis by kids older/bigger than me (was 13 when I entered high school). Realistically, the only other path for me would have been drugs. I'm certain of that. I went to a therapist once during that time period and she noted that the game was the only thing holding me together.

By contrast, WoW in 2005 is one that I do regret. I had some health problems, but using that game as an escape was not the answer. That was a bad year.

I haven't given much thought to the 92348 games of LoL I played. I could lazily write that off as "work-related" or social (it was a great way to network within the company), but I think I overdid it with playing competitively. At the very least, finding a less-stressful way to spend my free time would have made for a smoother work-life balance. Still, I don't regret most of that time I spent.

And yeah, some of my past behavior is ugly. I was immature well into my 20's.

I actually believe this p strongly though, not just for myself but for most people (assuming that they did actually change eventually and use their experiences to do mo better things later).

I mean, I can still regret things + believe this (and do).

For myself, I definitely could have learned the same lessons and spent like half the amount of time on vidya though lol

    never regret video games

regret the bad games you decided to play for a long time instead

I played more team fortress 2 than everquest and I don't regret any of that, but that's the longest i've played a game and eq is probably second and I don't regret stopping that at the time I did either

i legit do not regret an ounce of any of my main RPG staples. that shit is basically like reading to me (esp. since i tended to favor the text-heavy games anyway lol)

but mmorpgs - there was a lot of waiting/grinding that i really don't think had any redeeming qualities huehuehue

i'd probably trade in some eq/daoc/wow time for more single-player stuff or reading or movies or you know, seeing the sun

I value the social aspects of MMOs more than the gameplay.

MMO game design is shameless in exploiting addictive impulses and dangling that carrot on a stick in front of you.

I regret that I completely neglecting language acquisition between tenth grade and age ~25 despite being conversational in Spanish at one point

Also growing up in a house with a piano and never learning to sight read sheet music

Also not learning to play drums when I was a kid

Basically all the stuff I’ll only ever be mediocre at at best because adult brains are garbage

I actually did learn some of that, but it didn't click with me how I could meaningfully apply it to things I enjoyed doing.

edit: also did the Fine on the Couch thing, to a painful extent.

I regret taking things too seriously as guildleader/office of guilds.

I regret not playing enough with my pals. Times in EQ and in GDS were happy times for me.
