Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen caused a minor freak-out on Wall Street on Tuesday when she raised the prospect that the Federal Reserve might have to hike interest rates to tame inflation in the wake of a large increase in government spending.

"It may be that interest rates will have to rise somewhat to make sure our economy doesn't overheat," Yellen said in a video interview with The Atlantic released Tuesday.

Yet Yellen rapidly rowed back her comments, saying at the Wall Street Journal's CEO council summit later in the day: "I don't think there's going to be an inflationary problem."

However, the words were enough to unnerve markets about the prospect of a rise in inflation that could pile pressure on the Fed to start unwinding its support for the economy sooner than previously expected.

Warren Buffett, the world's most famous investor, sounded the inflation alarm at the weekend.

"We're seeing very substantial inflation," Buffett told the annual Berkshire Hathaway investor meeting. "People are raising prices to us and it's being accepted."

And another prominent investor, Allianz chief economic adviser Mohamed El-Erian, on Monday questioned the Fed's argument that price rises will prove "transitory."

On inflation, my understanding of it is that the main risk of sustained, long-term inflation would be what's called "wage-spiral" inflation, where a general price spike will lead to demands from unions for higher wages; higher wages would force businesses to increase prices again, and so on and so on.

The problem is that unions aren't really powerful anymore and no one has any great expectation that wages will rise, so the mechanism for wage-spiral inflation has broken down.

So Genesis... which is supposed to be the most top tier place to park your coins... requires a minimum balance of $5million. They don't advertise their rates or anything online but their rep told me the rates change weekly. They can offer ~4% APY for Link on open term agreements with the option for slightly higher yields if I lock in my principal for longer. Many of the platforms that have Interest Bearing accounts loan their crypto to Genesis. I was just trying to see if it would make a difference cutting out the middle man.

Currently BlockFi still has the highest interest rate of 4.5% but I might consider moving over to Genesis because they have the highest level of security. They apparently do many things manually so while it might take a long time to do a withdrawal because someone is physically moving things in cold storage, its dramatically less likely a hack can steal funds. I also heard that they do a face validation, ID validation, etc etc when you try to withdraw so I'm assuming they'll make me take a pic holding something up with writing on it.

For the amount of money I'd be holding with them, I'd prefer the maximum level of security.

Also, the rep kinda hinted that at the rate everything's going, Link could double in a couple of weeks. Since he works for Genesis and Genesis is the major loan company that loans to exchanges and really high end clients... I'll take that as golden advice.

what makes you think wages are especially important in this regard? the usual macroeconomic mechanism i'm familiar with is more on the consumption side, and framed like:

    1. prices go up
    2. ppl see # 1, decide prices will keep going up
    3. ppl decide to spend more money now, rather than wait for prices to go up and have it buy less, later
    4. bc more spending in # 3, prices go up
    5. return to # 1

ive never seen much good empirical work on this, though, so i dont have a good feeling for what proportion of variance it tends to explain in price movements, or even if macroeconomists typically think they can reasonably carve that out

I think maybe the question for ppl who are econ-knowledgeable is how concerned should we be about prices of everything rocketing up (building materials, housing prices, food, and cumrocket are things i've noticed personally - i'm sure it's p much everything tho)

Do you try to hedge against it? Should we expect 18% interest rates coming up next? Will be there some big pop and Depression v2.0 around the corner?

(of course this is silly and none of you know the real answers, but make shit up and make me feel better thanks)
