oic on googling a whole bunch i was clearly not paying attention enough in Ep 1 and missed that

moiraine apparently says the dragon could be either a man or a woman?

given that half the story revolves around the red aes sedai specifically hunting down men who can channel, motivated in significant part by their hunt for the dragon reborn, and the entire magical superstructure of the series and lore is built around the world's sex differences in magic, i dont see how this change is supposed to work. it feels like a really procrustean way to try to make an older narrative (that already has several fairly interesting, powerful women characters) fit into a modern director's diversity play

i actually rather like the trend of strong female leads and such in modern-day fantasy shows and literature, but you have to actually respect the story when you do this, and in this case it just looks like they've fundamentally altered a major plot point without even bothering to consider how it fits into the broader world

so far the perrin change is worse, but i think this may turn out to be worse down the road. it just doesnt seem like a thing you can easily paper over after fucking it up; it contradicts too much of the rest of the story

    in the books

he doesnt have a wife in the 2 rivers at the start (and now he does, in the show; not sure which one of the two you're familiar with). he's just one of the 3 ta'veren boys, an especially pacific one. most of the series for him is about the struggle between his peaceful smithin' ways and his not so peaceful not smithin' ways

the show has tried to rapidly accelerate all that with a wife that didnt exist, introduced only to kill her off in the first 5 minutes. it has some of the same effects, but, having read the books, it's so transparent what they're doing w/ his 5-minute wife that i felt zero pathos for it, and especially for him being the one to accidentally kill her himself, with an ax (an ax being the specific weapon in the books that is constantly juxtaposed w/ his smithing hammer as he struggles w/ himself)

also i think it's made the rest of his romantic storyline somewhat harder for them to tell effectively, as "i accidentally ax-murdered my first wife 5 minutes into this story" is quite the emotional obstacle for him to work through months or even a year or whatever it is that the rest of the story happens later

Hmm, I only read the first book and the name rings a bell but I don’t remember much about the character

Wasn’t there someone who was briefly possessed by a knife or something? Was that him?

Rewatched Demolition Man and wow that movie is way funnier and even better than I remembered. It’s also hilariously anti-woke, almost like it was made this year.

watched the first couple episodes of the live action cowboy bebop.

Not totally terrible but not good enough to compel me to finish the series.

watched the first episode. didn't hate it but didn't love it either

I dig the style/world, but at times it seems like cheap off-brand Tarantino direction that can't quite stick the landing (I dunno how else to describe). I can overlook some of the sets looking cheap as a stylistic choice. It's weird because some of them look really good.

I wonder how people would react if this hadn't had the Cowboy Bebop name. It's not as bad as I was expecting based on some of the reviews.

the comparison to bebop is definitely a significant part of my saying it was a catastrophe

as a standalone thing it's bad but not god awful

the beginning is also less bad than the ending. basically anytime they give vicious & julia (esp vicious) more screentime (who had like a grand total of 10 mins in the whole of the original series -- and w/ good reason; not bc it's good to have non-characters, generally, but because less-is-more with a creature like vicious, and bc they were sposed to be ghosts of spike's past, not some modern criminal soap opera), it gets dramatically worse. vicious has a weird juxtaposition of absurd cartoon bad guy and super intimidating mob boss going on in the netflix bebop that just doesnt work at all

what would consistently take me out of the action scenes was the slow motion "jumping away from an explosion or (insert dangerous thing here)" cuts that were super cheesy. not sure how they made it past editing.

    Squid Game was boring

Gotta stop giving shows ten episodes to prove to me they’re worth that much of my time when the first episode or two doesn’t move me.
