Should I watch these movies/shows?

I somewhat agree with both sides on tenet. The movie is certainly better on subsequent viewings (watched it twice), but at the same time can a movie really be good if you have to watch it numerous times and read reddit analysis threads about it? That just seems like the storytelling is actually not good. Also feels like why westworld got tiring. I watch shows/movies to be entertained not to come away with homework.

I don't mind the brain-twister puzzle concepts (and clearly Nolan loves that shit), but I think it sort of loses its luster when it degenerates into high tech espionage men in expensive suits fighting or chase scenes out of a Dan Brown novel.

I have to care about the characters. Idris Elba was a big ol nothingburger. If someone were to ask me to describe his character, I'd have nothing for them. He's uhh... a guy?

We watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop and yup it’s a mess. I feel like you could hand the existing footage to a better editor and maybe run it through an Instagram filter and significantly improve it, but the I don’t have the energy to armchair direct it beyond that. It feels like a cascade of minimal effort starting from a real limp dick of a script that at minimum could use a punch up writer—it’s 90% soy banter. The actors have no chemistry and seem to be making no effort but how could you expect them to, working with those lines?

Tenet expects a great deal of your attention and doesn’t really reward it. It’s not that it’s too complicated—it’s really not that complicated—it’s that you can sense in the writing Nolan anticipating all manner of criticism and writing it off as people being unable to follow the movie and so compensating by turning 90% of all lines in the film into unnecessary exposition. Which is standard Nolan, really.

At no point in that movie did I feel anything

Idris elba isnt in tenet or any other nolan movies. Assume that's an accident and not a kliop joke. The black guy in tenet is denzel's kid.

no I legit thought it was Idris Elba lol. I guess that says a lot about how memorable the characters in that movie were for me

Yeah, Denzel’s kid was awesome in Ballers. Even before I looked up his bio, I thought he was going to become a big star. I was happy to see him land a huge role in Tenet, but as Sear says, his role was completely forgettable

I can't decide between starting Foundation or Cowboy Bebop. It's tough a call whether an anime or book live-action tv adaptations are usually worse (although I still normally like them anyway).

Dad got me to read foundation in high school

He said the show started out all right then ended horribly

"Abhorrent" was the actual word used

Can we talk about Rosamund Pike just constantly handing out first class round trip tickets to Bonertown?

She doesn't do it for me at all. Acting chops are there tho so whatever.

I liked the third episode and admittedly wanted to watch more. It's not bad. It's not must-see either, but it's not bad and could still potentially be really good.

    Liked:
    • The Whitecloaks. No time wasted in showing the brutality/evil of the questioners (contrasted by the moral complexity of Bornhald). Great costume designs here. Tense scene that lets Moiraine show her guile.
    • Shadar Logoth. Pretty much looked exactly as I imagined it. They cut Mordeth from the book, but I was fine with it.
    • Thom. Seems like great casting. He's cool.
    • The outdoor sets. All mostly look gorgeous and less low-budget than the Edmonds Field one from the first episode.
    • The dream sequences.
    Didn't like:
    • Evil innkeeper was a little hokey.
    • Tinkers look like castoffs from a modern ren faire
    • No Elyas? That sucks if they cut him. One of my favorite characters from the first book.

i only watched episode 1 so far

it feels very middling right now. not the terrible trainwreck that the bebop adaptation is, but nowhere near GoT seasons 1-3 either

the perrin changes are so on-the-nose i cracked up when the thing happened. moraine's magic looks kinda goofy. slugface seems like voldemort junior; i feel like he should have more of a maggot-y complexion/texture. padan fain felt a bit off to me -- was he always so obviously a dickhead? i skipped the first 2 books when i picked the series back up again and finished it a few years ago so maybe i just forgot how he was in ye olden days. i also definitely dont remember the whole Wisdom / romance minor subplot tension thing at all. lan and nynaeve arent how i pictured them but that's minor

and they're pronouncing nynaeve wrong that's not how it sounds in my head:redface::redface:

the trollocs were well done tho (but i felt like rand's father should have been way more of a badass in this scene). their lil 2 rivers village looks p kewl, decent set design. acting isn't terrible. and not a single Blackmail = Black Male joke in a whole episode! 10/10 matt damons
