a lot of the criticism in general for anime-to-live-action adaptations just seems kind of hypocritical to me idk

there's always the camp of overzealous weebs who will complain if the slightest thing doesn't match the anime, yet they'll also complain about the things that were faithfully translated (while failing to recognize that the reason a lot of that shit doesn't work in live action is bc it either just doesn't translate smoothly to live action people, and comes across as stupid/ridiculous/cringey simply because it is .... it's just easier to overlook when you're watching a stylized cartoon)

i agree there's some of that, but also think it's kind of an area where criticism comes from many different places

like -- there's some criticism that's just "this is different in feeling from Bebop; but, had you did it differently, it would be different in execution from Bebop", and i agree that, well, fuck those people

but i think there's also a lot of criticism aimed at, for example,

    - additions/direction that change the characters (jet no longer seems like the clear level-headed cast member; so far, faye seems more restrained and grounded than anything, while she was really the most impulsive figure in the original cast; spike is missing most of his signature fluidity)
    - the costuming/atmosphere-CGI are pretty damned impeccable. so why isnt the acting keeping up?
    - some of the casting choices, especially Vicious, are just bizarre
    - certain points in the overarching story have been changed pretty dramatically (unless i am misremembering julia and vicious's relationship)
    - im not sure how to illustrate it without spoiling, but the show has gone out of its way to take considerable ambiguity in the original and turn it into specific branches of possible history, i.e., to remove any uncertainty about what happened. this on top of making specifically weird choices w.r.t julia and viciou

these things don't seem small to me, and they are things that the original anime handled so well that, by comparison, for someone who loved the original (which is, i think, a much larger sea of people than you realize), are kind of deafening

Not going to defend the show because I haven't even watched it yet, but I feel like it's a complete uphill battle for any director looking to do a live-action adaptation of an anime.

The direct comparisons to the anime are inevitable. Splitting the existing fanbase is inevitable (pandering to purists vs satisfying casual viewers). It's an unenviable task. I don't know why they even bother doing these in the first place.

If they do them just like the anime, you'd see the "it's too faithful/similar to the source" criticism. I remember people complaining about that with Watchmen because they did a bunch of picture-perfect recreations of the comic panels.

One of the major reasons i won't watch anime is the fandom. People are so fucking cringe about their gatekeeping.

i think these types of translations from anime to live action could use a little more restraint. The actress can convey the same jittery, upbeat tone of the original without acting like a cosplayer from Tampa

I completely agree on all of this. Like I said before, I don't see - other than a shameless "known IP" cash grab - why someone would even try to do a live adaptation of Bebop. I frankly think it was kind of a silly idea.

But I was willing to give it a shot, and have watched a few episodes of the show. It's fun. It's not Bebop. I don't know that I could have asked for more, but I also can't praise it, given the show it chained itself to.

I'ma watch it soon and will probably be disappointed, but I'm gonna try to go into it without mentally comparing it to the anime and see if that helps.

Wheel of Time is kinda cheesy so far. The first episode was like 20 minutes of horsey Moiraine magic CGI that looked distractingly bad to me (way too bright), shoehorned-in sex scenes & some odd minor changes from the book.

When I read the scenes of her doing magic in the books, I just did not imagine this kinda frumpy woman doing slow yoga poses while glowing white. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be, but that's not the way shit went down in my mind. I'll keep watching for a few episodes before I judge it beyond that.

Oh damn, not sure if I regret clicking that WOT thread. That's .. a bad choice .. for Perrin IMO, though. A lot in the name of 'accelerating storylines', usually with a sacrifice to the gods of seasons 1-3 of GoT, it sounds like.

too lazy to go into detail, but I thought the second episode was substantially better than the first

shame they're recasting Mat after this season (for reasons unclear - the guy deleted all his social media accounts and went off the grid) as I really like that actor in the role so far

The dialogue in Tenet was barely audible and fairly incomprehensible when I watched it, which kind of ruins a movie based on complicated time travel scenarios.

when i first watched it when it came out — enjoyed it for the spectacle but had really no grasp of the intricacies of the film. still loved it.

5 viewings later and a lot of reddit thread + youtube video scouring and it’s easier to piece together but i still find it difficult to wrap my head around some concepts in real time while watching the movie. for me this doesn’t detract from the movie and makes it more compelling. still can’t begin to imagine how difficult it was to pull off.

i think its so polarizing because it really isn’t a typical movie — seems it was created based around hard science concepts (temporal pincer, entropic winds etc.) and fleshed out from there. ultimately meant to be watched several times.

it was the Jared Leto of Christopher Nolan films: trying too hard and thinks it's a lot cooler than it actually is
