Loved Mandy. The cinematography was something else - the atmosphere felt even more palpable and stylized than a Lynch film at times. I'm too tired for a proper review so I'll leave it at that.

Anyone watched Beyond The Black Rainbow by the same director?

So what Beyond the Black Rainbow wasn't and which Mandy was was fun. Nick Cage movies automatically come with a bit of a veneer of silliness, and demon bikers from hell summoned with an ocarina with a funny name does nothing to detract from that veneer. So the operatic lighting and brilliant cinematography etc creates this effect of an homage to a fundamentally really goofy genre of 70s budget horror treated with the greatest possible care and it's just fucking great

BtBR on the other hand is just purely high, high quality art house directing and cinematography over a barebones narrative. If I had tuned into this movie randomly flipping through channels in the middle of the night without context I would've been 100% sure that I was watching some David Lynch film I hadn't heard of. Except that I think this movie does a much better job maintaining the feeling of a coherent narrative while fully indulging in the high concept art sequences, and none of the really out-there stuff ever feels shoehorned. It's like if David Lynch tried out his crazy what-if-I-put-a-flashlight-and-a-gopro-in-a-paper-bag-and-then-put-it-in-a-blender ideas out in his garage at home before committing them to film, and then only used the very best ones in his major works instead of just spitballing shots right on set.

There is kind of a question of whether it's over the top, though, and I'm glad I watched Mandy first, because I dunno if I would've been able to feel the goofiness of it (and I'm actually less sure now that there were any tongues in any cheeks in the making of Mandy) after watching this movie. At about the 45 minute mark I was starting to think that if the movie just continues at this pace and opacity and drumming at this same emotional chord right up to the end it may not be worth it, but then it does start to move forward (the 1966 scene is awesome), and eventually the tone changes. One of the things I really liked was

When Elaina reaches the break room you're almost as relieved as she is to be out of the facility, because the visual and aural tension that's been building for pretty much the entire film up to that point is suddenly gone, and the effect is jarring. You kind of start to forget(/question whether) this takes place in just regular ol' 1983 and not some Soylent Green nightmare alternative history world until this scene.

I've often thought about what it would be like to be watching a movie and have it end the way this one did. I'm surprised someone had the balls to do it, and I kind of love that they did it for a movie that's so grandiose the whole rest of the way through. I'm sure some people will take it as her having killed him using telekinesis or something, but it seems pretty plain to me that that's not the intention, there, and I prefer to think he just tripped because sometimes dumb shit kills people and that's life.

The bit with the two stoners in the woods was weird. On the one hand, I like that it shakes up the tone and grounds the movie in its setting, similar to the break room shot, and obviously it contributes to the sense of menace posed by Barry on his rampage, but the part where he smells the fat guy and then says "you fucked her" over and over before stabbing him in the mouth--is there a point to that? Does it serve a narrative function or is it just strange and random for the sake of making him seem extra weird? If that's the idea, it seems a little forced and unnecessary. But maybe the idea is to counterbalance the impression you might get that he actually has special insight/foresight about the universe because of his "seeing the eye of God" after his rant to Rosemary?

Overall definitely a work of art, and worth a watch. Many, many brilliant shots and moments that stick with you.

Cool, I'm gonna watch it this weekend (with realistic expectations obv since I know it's a low-budget art film w/ a threadbare plot).

I'm gonna watch this ok. We checked out the flat earth documentary on Netflix instead last weekend and regretted it.

This is also in the queue:

    That is a horrible trailer.

I’ve watched a few episodes of it, and it’s really all over the place. Each is a completely different short story with completely different style. Some of it works well, and others don’t. It’s like those gimmick roulette jelly beans where half of them are awesome (e.g. lemon) and the other half look exactly the same but taste disgusting (vomit). You never know what you get until you commit.

    Watched BTBR finally.

I'm glad I did, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The Under The Skin levels of slow pacing (i.e., really slow) and incomprehensible narrative tested my patience at times. There's a lot of long close-up shots of faces with not a lot going on.

I loved the atmosphere, visuals, and the moog synth score. Is it just this director's style to make you feel like you're on hallucinogenics? The sets for the underground lab reminded me of 2001.

The bad trip sequence was one of those things that gets burned into your brain visually after you see it, but as a whole I just felt kind of disconnected and sad for both of the characters. You're not given much reason to care about them, so it's more just the generally somber tone.

Apparently the director made it as a catharsis after both of his parents died, and thematically it's a criticism of baby boomers and Reagan-era politics:

I think he unintentionally kills himself by trying to move when she was holding his feet.

The abrupt murder spree was weird to me too. It's obvious he's insane/psychopathic by that point, so it seemed forced. I think he accused the guy of fucking the girl because he was obsessed with her + possessive and paranoid.
