Not quite the screen size I was hoping for, but given my current shitbook is 11.6", 15.6" will probably still feel pretty great, and it's got a 256 GB SSD & 1080p reso, clocks in just under $500 before tax:

Each processor sounds really slow (1.8 GHz & I don't recognize the chip series) but there are 4 of them and as discussed above I don't do much that's processing intensive, so maybe this is exactly the sweet spot I wanted.

i dont know what fledged means but that laptop sounds nice

i dont care enough about performance to wait though

i pulled the trigger on the $489 laptop i listed above. 4" more on my screen diagonal, jump up to 1080p res, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and an i5 competitive quad-core within budget were very convincing

On a side note it just amazes me how many people still buy into Apple's horseshit products

It's a well-made machine. It's very light and the track-pad is excellent. OSX is also a pretty good operating system. It has some of the advanced features of being a unix variant, and at the same time is very user-friendly. Part of the reason you see so many devs using Macs.

If you want advanced features of a unix variant & you actually have an opinion about the OS's beyond a casual user's "ive only used this one so it's the best," Ubuntu's plenty user-friendly and has all the advanced unix features you could want. And it costs $0.

That leaves "It's a well-made machine. It's very light and the track-pad is excellent." as the primary motivation for paying $1,000 instead've $500, to which I say, good sir:

    UPDATES

    - laptop '5' key was not a well constructed key, very nonresponsive
    - the ethernet card built into this is apparently of a type that ubuntu doesnt know how to handle very well which makes me p sad

I need a second laptop that I can actually run programs on. I haven't bought a PC in like 7 years, but the new MacBook Airs are like 1200-1400 of our precious Canadian dollars. On the low end.

Comparable, and by comparable I mean vastly superior, PC laptops are going for like $500-700. I'm not sure it's worth the extra $700 for a shittier machine just because I don't want to run an anti-virus and re-learn windows.

Also, thx 4 doing all the legwork in finding a new machine for me. I will now like all your posts in this thread, so you can now be closer to the mighty Searyx.
