There's absolutely no doubt what stopped the pandemic in Australia. First borders were closed relatively quickly, then returned travellers were put into isolation in guarded hotels for two weeks. It stopped the pandemic dead in its tracks. We did also have a lockdown which is slowly reopening and despite being convicts we're surprisingly law abiding and rule-tolerant.

There's actually a current outbreak in Melbourne with about 60-70 new cases a day, which is mainly from the virus escaping quarantine hotels, which goes to show you how easily it can get out of control. A number of suburbs in Melbourne have now been locked down. I kid you not that a security guard guarding a hotel is alleged to have had sex with one of the people in quarantine.

In other states, the army and police are guarding the hotels.

First guy is something you might see in east Texas. The closer you get to Louisiana, the more swamp hillbillies you see.

I think they weird me out a lot more than the garden variety rednecks and good old boys that you see everywhere else.

tbh everything gets weirder when you go east. I've been canoeing in Arkansas (straight out of Deliverance), all over Texas, etc. And I have to say the most backwoods shit I've ever seen was in rural Louisiana and rural Florida. I did some kayaking in Florida around the blackwater river area and there were some strange fucking people out there.

I believe the median age of infection and hopsitalization has been reported to be lower, but it is surprisingly inconvenient to try to dig that up through google and I'm going by memory.

But, the US is still dogshit.

Their deaths per 1,000,000 people has gone down much more slowly than other badly infected countries and they are still rolling along at hundreds of deaths per day:

    American deaths are also younger:

So the US likely has a greater average Years of Life Lost than other countries.

And the big worry about deaths is in September and October when models predict jumps because of flu/pneumonia season. The US and Sweden really have to bank that herd immunity pays off by then, or the response will be a clear failure. If, instead of herd immunity, you shitters simply have a large base of community spread from which to kill people, you are going to be in trouble.

Sounds reasonable about the age. Also about more young people dying due to obesity levels in the USA (and maybe skimpy insurance coverage?).

Regarding which country managed the pandemic best, we would have to first agree on the objective. Just minimizing the immediate number of covid deaths, or even the long term number of covid deaths, is likely not the best metric when you have strong adverse affects on the economy (which we know also reduces quality life years). What I'm mainly concerned about re: Sweden is that we will still end up with more economic damage over all, since we may have to wait longer to get the retail/service sector back to some kind of normalcy due to the remaining disease. This would mean it's a lose-lose scenario. I also think it's really unfair towards risk groups who have to say completely isolated for several months more.

What is clear globally though, is that those that kept infected out of the country to begin with are the big winners. Almost every single western nation failed spectacularly to begin with, and everything since then has been a shit show of shortages and improvised solutions.
