So we recently moved and bought all new gear for our home network. On Comcast 1gb. Netgear modem that is Comcast compliant. Used a linksys router for a solid 2 months without a single issue connectivity wise but the range was not enough for the size of the house. So we settled on the newest Netgear Orbi Mesh system RBK850. https://www.netgear.com/orbi/rbk852.aspx

The system is wonderful in terms of providing great coverage everywhere. The problem comes with connectivity. The fucking thing disconnects constantly. It is MOST noticeable with gaming. League of Legends gives us the disconnect / reconnect nonsense. Magic the Gathering Arena just disconnects; often before the game even finishes loading and then that is it; frozen until reboot. Even our Apple TV and Samsung smart tv give us the network disconnect error and we have to reboot them to reconnect.

We have tried multiple firmware versions. Tried redirecting ports for the games (which is kind of a pita on the orbi - unable to allow both of our comps to connect using the same ports.), nothing so far has worked.

I have a support ticket thru email in with Netgear and they are taking their sweet time (live chat on their website doesn't work because .... disconnect)

So, help me TZT; you're my only hope. I want to fucking game and I cannot.

Is it possible to return it still? The only mesh I've used is Gryphon... I use that now and I love it (expensive as shit though)

I wouldn't put up with that disconnecting bullshit it would drive me crazy.

There are rare occasions when ppl live in an area where there is crazy signal overlap (like in crowded apartment buildings) but I doubt that's what is happening to you.

It is weird though, Orbi does have good reviews. Could try swapping for a different unit, maybe a hardware issue?

I’ve got an older set that I’ve had for 3 years, and they work great. I’d check which mode you have it set to in Advanced Settings (Access Point vs Gateway). If the Comcast equipment is more than just a simple modem, you probably need to be in Access Point mode. At a glance, not sure what else could be going wrong, you may want to see if this same issue happens when connecting wired vs wireless to the main unit and the satellite closest by, as that may narrow down the source of the problem.

Let me hit these as bullet points:

-Yup, can still return for another 20 days or so I think.
    - in a house in oakley, I don't think there is much overlap signal wise

    - Ill check the adv setting for access point vs gateway now.
    - It isn't comcast equipment, it is a netgear modem that is comcast compliant
    - have done all the wireless v wired versions of connection with same results

    Going crazy

    fuck ps4 games

when does D4 and BG3 come out ?

Advanced Setting set to Router mode - not sure putting it on access point will fix anything; my modem does not seem to also contain router capabilities.

If your Netgear device is handling traffic routing, you likely need to swap your Orbi to AP mode. I have ATT Fiber with an ATT provided gateway (required for service), with my Orbi set up behind that, and with AP mode enabled I’ve not had any issues. The only time I used Gateway mode was a brief period when I had cable internet a few years ago, with an Arris Surfboard modem.

Hmm, at a glance I’d say Gateway mode is probably the correct setting, but I’m definitely not an expert here, just an Orbi user that hasn’t had any problems. I’d try using the system without any satellite units and see if it works ok, and if so, the issue may be with the wireless backhaul communication between those and the main unit.

You can send packets by smoke signal in a pinch if you have a blanket and quick hands, but to receive packets in return you will need to learn the language of the router

I will add, I tried gigabit (asymetric) cable a few years ago, and had to downgrade to a lower speed because the provider was not able to keep a stable connection at that speed, causing the line to drop frequently. The issue may also have been with the modem itself, which is a different model than yours, but you may want to test a wired connection directly to your modem for a day and see if you have the same issue. If so, the problem may be with your modem, or your provider. Not sure how long you’ve been using your non-Orbi gear or this provider at this speed, so if you were using it for a few days without issue, it may be the Orbi itself.

We were using the Comcast 1gb connection with the netgear modem and the aforementioned Lynksys router for about 6 weeks I think w/o a single drop.

Currently my PC is wired directly to the Orbi router. Tried loading MTG: Arena. First attempt failed. Second attempt loaded the game (using run as administrator) game loaded and I got into a match, lasted 2 turnds before disconnect. Reconnected by reloading the game, and crashed again.

Any way to connect directly to modem and set if that fixes things? Just to make sure it's actually the orbi router that is the problem?

Yep that’s what I meant, if the issue only happens when connected to the Orbi, then the issue is either with the interaction between the modem and the Orbi, or the Orbi itself. My Orbis also emit a colored ring from the top whenever an issue is present (IE dropped connection, you may want to watch for that as well to help diagnose the issue, assuming this newer model has the same feature.

There is also an area in the Orbi GUI that allows you to see event logs, and another one that shows connection statistics, those may be helpful as well (both under the Advanced tab, Administration submenu).

Do you know which WAP (Wireless access point), the physical one you're connected to when the disconnect happens?

If you connect via ethernet cable does the issue still happen?

Does it happen the same way across all devices connected?

Are you able to log into your router or do you know how?
