So my best friend just had his first daughter about 3 weeks ago. Today they took her to the first of "regular" chiropractic visits and said that she has an ear candling coming up soon.

I watched the video of it happening and was horrified (further searching has found even more extreme adjustments) by what I saw and cannot see any reason it needs to happen.

I've spent the last few hours on google and it's really annoying to sift through it but it seems like it's becoming more and more popular thing to do. Thoughts one way or the other?

Is it normal to take a newborn to a chiropractor?

Also everything I've read suggests that ear candling does literally nothing and is potentially harmful if botched.

and why is a chiropractor recommending or administering ear candlings? (probably because they're both bunk medicine)

Does the baby have some kind of issue? Cause it sounds like a good way for the baby to develop one. Not necessarily speaking against going to see a chiropractor if you have an issue, but going as a child with no problem seems like asking for trouble. Don't fix what isn't broken.

kill the parents immediately, do not hesitate. be merciful to the child now. it may still possess the ability to not be retarded so take it in and raise it but do not garner affection for it for if it shows any signs of not out growing it's genetic predisposition for ignorance you must end the lineage. You can test it pretty early on once they start reading by buying some newspapers and leaving the horoscope page at easy access. If it finds any kind of interest in such things end her, you did your best and were merciful.

Finally got ahold of my friend, he didn't go to the chiropractor himself and had thought it was just a gentle massage. He was pretty pissed they used that spring loaded hammer to do a spinal adjustment, he also said he's veto'd the ear candling thankfully. I guess they (my friend and his gf) think she has some hip issue and he didn't think a lite massage could be a bad thing or make it worse.

From what I can see it's a trend to do. My cousin does it with all his kids saying that "it's better to make sure the spine is adjusted correctly from the start then try to fix a problem."

I have no idea what the appeal of ear candling is, it just seems to go hand in hand with child chiropractic visits.

This was my exact thought. This really has me frustrated because ultimately it's not my child so while I can criticize, all I can really do is watch it happen and hope for the best (that being that there is no negative effects.)

If there was a valid contrary argument I would love to hear it but it's just so annoying to sift through.

Spines are generally normally adjusted by virtue of being a human without scoliosis, if someone has a spinal issue they should see an orthopedist. This is pretty scary because, once again, the potential for damage seems much higher than the near non-existent potential for benefit.

100% agree. When it was explained to me they made it sound like it was common sense and all I could do was go cross eyed at how little sense it made while trying to force my brain to see it their way.

Advise him to consider taking his 3 week old baby to a sauna next to eliminate toxins.

I'd suggest doing this after the ear candling, but before chelation therapy. And it's certainly not too early to try a coffee enema. Be sure to use an e-meter to determine any health problems.

Would you suggest the coffee enema over a colon cleanse? How do you feel about hot yoga over the sauna? I know they advise you wait until at least a month old but it seems the trend is "treat the problem as early as possible, before it even becomes a problem."

    Thank god for the internet!

... I have some friends who will jump on any and every "healthy" alternative ever without doing any research but so far they don't do anything that just sounds stupid. I can't even imagine how one could justify how a coffee enema would work?

Ear candling isn't necessarily a chiropractic thing but it's on the same "alternative medicine" spectrum. Would not suggest using it on babies (or sticking anything else into babies' ears).

BTW, looked up ear candling. Gotta agree with Xanon here. Kill the parents now. I don't care if they changed their mind. The fact that they would even consider it means they gotta go.
