I'm feeling less confident of their chances all the time.

Not because I don't think electric cars won't take off, but more because I think some tipping point will happen and there will just be way too many players to compete with (and Musk's tendency to consistently flout convention will eventually catch up to him when it comes to boring things like manufacturing.)

Stupid name sounds like trashcan. But that's a p big bet by Porche.

Every car manufacturer is prolly going to have to get on the electric bandwagon - shit if they're not well on their way already they gotta be feeling the heat from falling behind by now.

Tesla is just really expensive. Nice looking cars but the average person isn't going to buy a 90k Tesla

Their biggest problem is just that, expense. Its unclear if they can even make the 35k model 3s without loss. I wonder how much they have left on the backlog of the premium models.

Other manufacturers seem to be taking a slower approach with hybrids. Full electric in luxuary is also doable. Tesla will either rise or fall on if they can crack the 35k barrier. I have no idea what their chances are, but it is an existential risk, and they will be facing it sooner rather than later.

Their other big risk is their oversell of full autonomy. I wonder if they have opened themselves up to a class action lawsuit.

Their lead in charging network is a big strength though. There is a lot of value in the company, so they may be able to partner on more equal terms if they have to.

I do. They are sleek + silent + great acceleration. The model3 interior is spartan to the point of minimalist except for a huge touch screen, which is an interesting direction at least.

It's still an early adopter market, but when battery costs has come down, and fast chargers are sufficiently prolific to overcome range anxiety, I would definitely consider getting one. Right now ICE is hard to beat for sheer utility though.

Yes, but you could get the quality of a BMW and Tesla combined in the malibu

Porsche are even more niche, and I assume expensive, than Tesla. I doubt they would cut into Tela’s market share too much.

There are lots of high end car brands that make a profit while only having a tiny share of the market. Most cars will probably be electric one day and Tesla as a brand will have to stand on their own without using the electric car angle as a gimmick.

I wouldn’t bet against the mighty Elon.

The base Taycan model is right around the same price point as a Tesla Model S. I think the demographic difference there is whether you want to drive something that looks like a Camry or not. If I'm spending 90k I think I'd rather go ahead and get that mid-life crisis Porsche styling.

+ I agree w/ Harper. There are nice hybrid options at 20k for people that don't want to spend that much on their metal box transport. My garbage Civic gets 40+ MPG in the city.

They have bet everything on Model3 though, which goes down to 35k. If they stay a luxury car maker only, at the very least their valuation will tank.

He probably is but I still agree with him.

35k is the same price point as a BMW 320i. It's not low enough for the average consumer.
