I’ll add you, I don’t remember my number. I still play the starter decks for constructed because I’ve been mulling over what deck to build with my wild cards. I do fairly decent in casual with the starter Vampires, Merfolk, Pirates, and Izzet decks. I was debating between mono red and mono blue for budget reasons, but was going to see how things shifted after RNA. It looks like mono red is even better with the Light up the Stage and Skewer the Critics, but I’ve seen a lot of people complaining that it’s played so much now.

What's the costing like for Arena? As a neckbeard I am genuinely interested however am too lazy to look it up.

Pack cost? Cards in pack? (assume standard MTG 15)
Trading? Card crafting? (Think dust in Hearthstone)
Other methods of card generation? I'm an infinite player in Hearthstone arena so I can generate both packs / gold to purchase other arena runs or packs etc. Does Arena have something similar? I saw Searyx talking about some kind of draft - same deal?

It's similar to Hearthstone. I like MTGA as a F2P game better.

You earn about ~1.5 packs a day (in gold) with quests. You get "wildcards" of 4 different rarity tags (which can be redeemed for any card) both randomly and after opening a set amount of packs, which is both more consistent and generous than HS. I haven't even played the game much and I have 6 legendary and like 14 rare wildcards. MTGA also gives you a lot of solid starter decks and rare cards for free.

There are multiple draft modes and special/limited-time events instead of an arena mode. Some of them are more costly and rewarding than others, blah blah blah, etc.

I quit playing Hearthstone a while back bc it's essentially MTG watered down to casual baby form. It plays itself most of the time instead of functioning as a game where you actually make interesting decisions.

Make MTGA ur main card game bitch and Slay the Spire ur side action.

It is overplayed (it's cheap to build & simple to play) and it is even better than it seems like it would be. I have lost to some green and white decks with it, though.

Light Up The Stage and Skewer The Critics are both awesome. This is a good example of how quickly it can get out of control with Runaway Steamkin.

it's a pretty good f2p. You'll play against other bad decks for awhile until you earn enough for a competitive deck. there's a starter deal for $5 that gets you a lot of gems/cards, but would not recommend spending more than that.

Posting in a WotC thread to see if any DC area daums want to join the D&D campaign I am starting to DM for. Looking at you @Agrul not sure who else is still around here. Maybe @Bison? @Jong might still be in Baltimore but that's a bit far and iirc he might have been expecting?

Fuck it let me just make my own thread, never stop posting.

Pop on every so often for a while, have like 100,000 gold and dozens of mythic rare wild cards, hundreds of rares. But have yet to do anything but the bunches of premade decks you get when you start. I put one deck together just fidgeting around but mostly played just a few times. Just do daily quest using premade decks that all perfectly fit the quests - each daily quest is along lines of "play 20 blue or red cards" and theres a premade deck that fits each color combo.

I don’t think you can spend gold directly in sealed, but you can play ranked draft events to try to convert the gold to gems.

The ranked draft had been the 2019 core set the past few weeks, but I think RNA ranked draft starts today and should be more interesting.

My best limited decks so far always seem to involve having a Dead Revels. The creature advantage seems to swing games. I actually drafted a 4 color deck recently while initially planning to go Simic only, but decided to splash a Judith that I opened and led to me adding Dead Revels + some good Gruul cards and it actually turned out to be awesome.

yeah, this is a set where commons matter the most, opposed to bomb-centric sets. I regularly first pick commons and go 3 colours.

The only times I've done poorly is simic or gruul. For me, RBW are the colours that win the most.

simic and gruul have amazing creatures, but i think it's a trap because there's so much removal in this set.

There are a bunch of powerful 2 and 3 drops in common rarity, then a bunch of powerful removal in common rarity so you can deal with any bombs or big creatures.

I play drafts to play more drafts, so I never rare draft and have no problem taking skewer the critics over a planeswalker

Stupid questions but I'm too lazy to research:

    1. What sets are on Arena? Is it it's own set of cards? Or Digital copies of X sets from MTG?
    2. Can you "craft" or buy individual cards? Say I need me a llanowar elf real bad, can I just make that bad boy for some gold or some other currency?
    3. If you get like 10 copies of said llanowar elf, can you disenchant / destroy for some kind of currency?
    4. Will playing this game help with more pussy juice?

Pokemon TCG can suck my hexproof trample dick.

I'm doing work right now with this Red/Green draft deck. I like to congratulate myself with a "Nice!" emote after every play.

    1. It's the current standard sets. I'm sure once the current ones phase away they'll add in a few more play modes that allow/restrict the ones getting phased out of standard. But so far seems to definitely revolve around just the newest stuff.
    2. It's actually stupid easy. You get "wild cards" randomly in packs, common, rare wild card, etc. Trade those wild cards in, basically, for any card of it's rarity no matter the set.
    3. nah, but with the latest set release they were suppose to have revamped the pack system in some way to prevent too many of certain cards in packs if you have 4 already.
    4. It's tough to say, it's not like a real magic deck you can pull out on a date or in a bar and wet the floors with power 9, a chick may be impressed but surely they will be skeptical as many will be lying about their arena decks.

The drafts and sealed mostly do require you to spend the cash to do, but thats where the fun is and a lot more competitive.
Random match making is suppose to put you up against similar decks (pre contstructed if thats what you select, and other custom decks if you're playing your own made.) The prob is it's random and when you select play it tries to match you but if no one else is looking for a match with similar deck selection it puts you against anything, for the sake of faster matches and not having you wait for minutes for a match.
So more often than not you're playing pre constructed against like OP mono-read, or you're playing your OP deck and rolling over pre-constructed.
Even just going pre-made against pre-made it's just boring luck of who draws the better first hand as they're all pretty over-tired and played out so it's not much even in the way of who can play the similarly powered decks better, everyone knows how to play the most god-awful boring merfolk deck, so it's just same boring do it just for daily quest.

But they'll do some fun other easy challenges like singleton decks, have to play a deck with no more than 1 of any card, or commons only allowed. Costs bit of gold and play games until you lose 2-3 times and win some random cards and gold based on how many times you win and only need a few wins to break even.

It's fun and worth it now only because honestly the F2P system is way borked atm, and it's so easy and fast to get anything you want that it is honestly just a sandbox deck builder, just limited to most recent sets. It also does take away from some of the thrill of trying to go after certain cards, opening packs etc etc.
All the thrill is definitely in drafts and sealed. Definitely.
