On Kate: "We see a woman in her prime: stylish, confident and positively radiant, nailing outfit after outfit in the style stakes — and it’s a joy to witness... That old uniform of girlish dresses, tan tights and nude heels has been replaced by dazzling super-chic outfits to satisfy even the most exacting fashionista." Daily Mail: June 16, 2019

On Meghan: "Proper royalty is about tradition and duty, self-effacing service and loyalty — year after year after year, season after season... That is not to say that a monarchy cannot or must not move with the times — simply that it has to resist the temptation to be buffeted by passing cultural trends. Fashion is the exact opposite. And as fashion’s most famous bible, Vogue exemplifies the transient nature of the beast." Daily Mail: July 29, 2019

I just enjoy that England/Wales are so backwards they enjoy the Royalty.

Ancient countries who founded the principle concept don't even use the idea.

It's part nostalgia and part PR investment. They are actually expected to spend their days being figureheads of the country. It's not just the UK either, there are several fairly popular monarchies in the EU as well as in Japan.

Some countries have nearly entirely ceremonial presidents instead, which just lacks the PR oomph of a royal. The economics of it probably doesn't pan out either way though.

It's important for countries to have leadership for national unity.

I am contributing to this discussion with a measured and nuanced perspective.

I'd most likely end myself if I couldn't escape a life where I was under constant shallow media scrutiny. Especially if they arbitrarily decided that I get to be the Unlikable One because I was half-black.

I have no strong feelings about this one way or the other

Or about the existence of the royal family in general (they are supposedly a net positive for the treasury, so eh)

Doesn’t the King of Denmark fly for a commercial airline?

I didn't actually care about this until a bunch of fucking American Tories started ripping on Meghan Markle and all my Revolutionary War feels came out.

Did this all start because they didn't include some pictures of their kids in a Christmas photo?

No idea, but it's not just as simple as racism, even though that definitely threw fuel on the fire. I'm not really up to date, but there was also a lot of friction between the expectations of a royalty and Markle wanting to continue living like the strong individualistic Hollywood actress that she was.

When you marry into a western royal family you effectively become partly owned by the public. There is an uneasy truce between western monarchs and the public, they stay in their gilded cage and at least keep up appearances of working for the public, and the public keeps funding them and letting them stay in their palaces (which are usually public property). Many seem upset about the financial angle: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...Prince-Harry-Meghan-Markles-funding-STOP.html

Every time a royal missteps people start talking about abolishing the monarchy entirely. This is also why Markle's individualism was probably frustrating for the rest of the royal family.

I don't really like the kind of people who would fit right in with the Royals. Maybe its because they are rich and every decision is business politics motivated. But I guess to each their own. I guess my issue is that they have been around for a long time and Meghan is the outsider. Seems like someone should have had the foreskin to see this coming :).

Yep just had our usual get the whole family sick with some germ spawned from the kids school. Come home and daughter has piled her snotty tissues on the table next to the couch watching TV.
