Went to this place near here called Lake Williams. The bridge was out to get there, so I had to take this really long and confusing detour. The advantage was there weren't many people there as a result and I got one of the best pictures I've ever taken in my life.

Did some Monterey Bay water meandering (okay it was actually my first fishing derby, not exactly a meander)

No, your generic grouper is an east coast thing. There is a pacific grouper but I'm p sure it's endangered and only caught in so-cal.

These are various types of rockfish, and one ocean whitefish.

It does look like fun. They sure look like groupers and when they are small like that we call them rockfish as well (protected until they are at least 20"). After looking at the following link I guess they are many different species and belong to the family Scorpaenidae - Wikipedia. Groupers are in the family Serranidae - Wikipedia.

    California Marine Sportfish Identification: Rockfish

There is one that is protected called a CowCod Sebastes levis - Wikipedia and is not expected to recover until 2060.

Yeah, you're totally right about how they look... the first time I saw a pic of one of those giant groupers I was like "good god, it's like a rockfish got hit by a an Enlargo-Gun"

I think the very biggest ones I've seen might be twice the size of what you see my carrying, and that would be considered huge around here.

Funny you post about mackerel... I caught a couple mackerel that day (to use as bait fish)... probably like 6-7 inches long only.

Insanely fast fish, you pull them out of the water and they are flipping around so fast you can barely see their tails.
