now i must figure out a clean workflow for remote-rendering on a 2nd pc

could pay for one of those remote access gui app things but would be more fun to script it so that it can be done easily just by tapping a command that kicks off an upload, then auto-ssh's into the other machine and starts the render, then downloads the result back or somethin

on the upside the new ssd works perfectly

and i actually bothered to learn where i'm supposed to put ssds instead of throwing them haphazardly into-big hdd ports unsecured like i had in the past

well i accept that now

i thought it would be ok because i didnt want to SLI them!

i literally just wanted one to do <most things> and the other to be my default in blender (which has a little config menu you can use to indicate what device should CUDA-empowered rendering)

also the new card was cheaper than my old card + has better rendering stacks and i was taken in by the allure of its rendering curves

    fake news

time I spent buying said imac: about a minute

time I've spent fucking with anything to get [anything] to work: none

    confirmed blazing fast

    + lower carbon footprint

i used to use a mac back when i worked as an editor on the paper in undergrad

    never again

altho i do like OS X better than windows

but i find building my own PC kind of satisfying

admittedly in a stressful maybe i'll destroy several thousand dollars worth of computing equipment in the next few hours sort of way

    but still pretty satisfying

i would like to go back to ubuntu but windows is good for vidya games + unity

considering trying to port my existing code into godot. p sure it has stable support on linux. also has an impressive range of languages supported; GDC & C++ makes for a really nice combo

in any event the new rendernig rig once i have money to build it will 100% run ubuntu. or maybe some more arcane flavor of linux if im feeling stressful-adventurous, but i've had good experiences w/ ubuntu

centos or ubuntu for your linux box, fuck all the others imo.

hipster linux flavors are all narcissistic endeavors in needless pain

or get w/the times and don't have a separate linux box at all. just use AWS and automate your setup/teardown so you can just drop a few bucks there when you need it / while you need it instead of managing yet another piece of hardware locally

if i were gonna do something other than ubuntu, it would defintely be something chosen to maximize pain / low-level technical suffering

i was thinking something like arch
