I have to work like 14 hours a day right now, which involves being on my feet for most of it. Now that I’m old, the process is just making me exhausted constantly. Not just mental exhaustion, like my muscles and joints constantly feel tired.

I’m not looking for a diagnosis, I know this is age-related cancer + AIDs. I’m wondering if old TZTers have any energy hacks beyond eating like an adult and drinking caffeine (I already consume as much as any human should in a day).

fools will tell you to drink less caffeine but I know with a deep and abiding certainty that that is the way of folly

I do find that there is a time for caffeine and a time for more hydration. The kind of tired that caffeine can address feels different from the kind that it can't in a way that I can't really describe, but you either know it or you don't, I suppose. But I definitely find that going for water instead of that third horse dose of caffeine later in the day often gives me the extra kick where experience tells me the caffeine would've resulted in headache or collapse or both.

FURTHER: the value of quick naps (12-20 minutes), and, especially, caffeine naps, cannot be overstated. Even if you don't actually go through a full REM cycle or even actually fall completely asleep (or perceive yourself to), it can do wonders for the kind of tired that coffee just cannot address (and often makes worse, in my experience).

LASTLY: drink your caffeine gradually over the course of the day instead of slamming a trente iceless doubleshot coldbrew to power through the morning or whatever.

Also I dunno about you but if I eat more than a few bites for lunch it's inviting an afternoon of nodding off. I generally eat a full breakfast and decent sized dinner but eat lightly if at all during the day.

Really? Do you get enough of a boost in the morning when you do that?

I was going to post power naps too. They work for me. If you go over ~25 minutes though then it becomes detrimental (because your brain will think it's time to sleep or whatever + science + blah blah blah).

Strength exercises help me with energy. I don't know if it's particular to my biology or what, but this doesn't hold true with cardio. Even like a 2-3 mile walk will feel good but I tend to get tired quicker afterwards. When I do strength-based exercise I get a nice energy boost for at least an hour. DDP Yoga is good for this as well and might help with joint pain.

Stimulants work of course and I'm assuming we all intake varying degrees of it (coffee, ADHD shit, Claritin-D, etc). Continually stacking more of them is one of those short-term solutions that will cost you over the long-term so I try to keep a strict cut-off point with that.

I try to drink a ton of water every day. I can't say if this helps with energy because I've never bothered to journal it, but it works for Thomas Brady.

also y are you on your feet for 14-hour workdays in your mid/late 30's?

I'd be fucking tired too. There's no getting around that.

Oh God, I’m going to have to be a guy that takes naps now because two of you recommended it.

I’m just constantly going between buildings, and rooms within those buildings doing short interviews and facilitating groups (which I have to stand for). I’m not lugging milk bottles, and I don’t have to deal with homeless people throwing shit at me or whatever it is Red has to deal with at night.

I like to work 12-16 hour days for a few months, then do short days or fuck all for a few months. This balanced lifestyle bullshit is not for me. I’m not a single mom trying to have it all.

I am currently sitting in the woods not being bothered by anyone. I also drink a gallon of water a night. But I have always enjoyed water and drink a lot. Maybe I am the wrong one.

I drink a lot of water, but I don’t like to chug it whilst working because I don’t like having to pee every 11 minutes. I drink it at prescribed times.

It should be mandatory in school to learn what your body signals are telling you, because for dipshits like me, it wasn't clear until I was 30.

Definitely agree with Ageless that the difference between needing caffeine and water is distinct. I find that my mouth "feels" slightly off and my head feels heavier -- that's how I know I'm dehydrated and no amount of coffee in the world will save me. Also, if you go into a nap with this feeling, you're going to have a bad time.

I've solved this problem by always having a massive water bottle at my desk, which I fill to the brim at the same time I'm making my morning coffee. I'll instinctively slam a fuckton of it, just because it's nearby. When it's empty, I refill it.

Then I'll make as many cups of coffee as I please, which is usually 2-3 double espressos per day.

I haven't felt dehydrated in a long time, and I never feel tired (at what is an office job).

Re: standing for 14 hours a day. I don't know. But carry around a water bottle.

Also there's nothing you can do about hangovers, even mild ones, there is no god on those days.

I drink an equal amount of water to whatever caffeinated drink I have, and I drink a lot of them, probably 4 glasses of coffee/energy drink and water by 2, so a total of 8 glasses of liquid

aerobic exercises are dramatic and will increase your energy levels

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I have played the gallon-of-caffeine in the morning game, and it's different, but you can drink poor-man's plain, medium cup of coffee and still be functional to an extent that's not noticeably diminished, in my experience. You're not going to punch straight through the morning malaise straight into the evanescent illusion of life satisfaction like drinking a Rockstar with three shots of espresso in it might do for you on the good mornings, but that feeling in my experience is pretty much synonymous with an afternoon on the strugglebus anyway so it isn't worth it.

Also I didn't say this before but it's big: coffee over energy drinks. I've done the energy drink thing. I still do it sometimes for jollies, but that shit is a quick moonshot with a hard crash. There are better ones and worse ones, but they all betray you in a way that coffee--even Starbucks coldbrew or whatever your candidate for strongest coffee is--doesn't.

I was really hoping someone was going to tell me to eat boar pancreas or something. Not drink water and exercise. But I guess I’ll try to be an adult about it.
