I don't necessarily need help, but I think it's pretty lame that in order to get an S3 static website to show up in the route53 URL dropdown for an A Record alias, the bucket name has to match the hosted zone name.

Took me a bit to figure out and it seems like a rly arbitrary requirement. And at least, given the aribtrariness of it, if this is unavoidable then it should be printed in bold print at the very beginning of the static-website-on-s3 docs that this is a requirement and will fuck you up unless you pick the right name.

Don't use static website endpoints with r53. It's a poor experience because they don't support ssl. Better to use cloud front with a s3 static website endpoint origin. Then you can use acm for free ssl.

The reason it's a requirement for r53 and static website endpoints is because s3 uses the "host" header to determine the bucket, so if you aliased or cnamed to anything else it wouldn't hit your bucket.

If you want to host www and apex, you'd need to have multiple buckets which sucks. Hence cloud front plus a single static website endpoint origin which you could serve lots of cnames from

Yeah, I figured that part out too and already implemented it. THANKS FOR NOTHING MAN

(j/k i appreciate the pointer anyway - this was surprisingly convoluted imo just to get something set up. another fucking weird/arbitrary quirk - the ACM cert would absolutely not pop up unless I created it in Virginia region. I mean maybe that shit would have showed up eventually if I waited enough hours but some dude on the internets posted that you have to use Virginia so I did that and in a few minutes I was able to use the cert for Cloudfront. FIX YOUR SHIT)

lol I found that documentation too @Chemosh, but given it ONLY works out of Virginia, I seriously think they should highlight that, or better yet - when actually using ACM in a different region it should just say "YO PAL U SURE U WANNA DO THIS HERE BECAUSE IT'S GONNA BE USELESS IF U USING CLOUDFRONT WHICH IS ABOUT 99.99% CERTAIN SINCE UR USING US FOR THE CERT LOL"
