    I suggest AVG (www.grisoft.com) or avast! (www.avast!.com) as anti-viruses.

Additionally, a second (or preferably a third) anti-spyware program is pretty necessary, 'cause no one gets it all. I suggest spybot and I think the other one was called trojan-hunter.

Nero isn't free (yes you can always get a serial from somewhere). Are there any good free alternatives?

Kazaa is shit. You can use e-mule for much better results. If you really like the gnutella networks then just get Limewire since it's about a billion times nicer than kazaa and offers the same stuff.

I second putty. Anyone that telnet's anywhere should be shot.

Don't forget Thunderbird for use over Outlook in a Windows environment.

Also unfortunatley all CDBurnerXP Pro did was burn some coasters for me :(
Hopefully the 3.5 they are touting will do better. I've been looking for a free CD/DVD suite for a while.

Nero has turned into a large bloated turd in the past few years. Amazing how such a great piece of software has managed to stagnate and even devolve a little over time.

Trillian can suck my nuts too since they started charging... GAIM meets all my IM needs these days and does so quite handily. Gaim = teh shizzle. Be sure to download the nifty add-ons to customize.

Umm... trillian still has a free version and it does handle Messengers besides AIM :p

    /agree

The day I had to start looking to a third party application for functionality Nero didn't give me then I started losing respect that they haven't earned back.

Trillian free version is fine and stable. You don't really get much out of paying...I do, but I've paid twice in four years mainly out of appreciation of the product and that catches you up on all updates to that time, so it's not like you need to do a "subscription".

Also, GAYM isn't an alternative for Win users is it? I thought they were just Linux.

What is up with Litestep? I was running this while I was still playing EQ. I was using win98se though.
I tried looking it up real quick through Google and it is not bringing up much besides broken links.
Does it work well, if at all, with WinXP? Or is it even worth it? I loved the interface of litestep a ton and want to set that shit up with winXP
