Yeah, I finally had success with a half-mage build. lol my 1st level 3 unit was a fucking ogre mage and I pretty much hate that unit but I don't question the RNG gods. I ended up w/only 2nd place, but me and the 1st place dude were so evenly matched it was ridiculous, each fight was a tossup, we were 1hp vs 3hp at the end.

Full frankenstein build - just a rando bunch of alliances that somehow worked well

unsolicited tip: put the hammer or bloodbound item on Luna (her passive synergizes well with any +damage items) and the scythe elsewhere

maelstrom should go on whichever ranged units have the highest attack speed

lazy build to win games that will work for anyone = trolls/knights

Take whatever is available early game (if there's 2 or more of a unit, take it). Ideally tanks (Pudge in particular) but ogre/warlock or razor can be fine too.

You want to get batrider and witch doctor online as soon as you can. Witch doctor is one of the best units in the game IMO. Shadow shaman can be okay'ish if you 2-star him but I typically keep him benched unless I get a warlord late-game.

Take any/all knights you see. They're all strong and that's the core of the build. Take advantage of any early round losses to pick them up on the free rerolls. By the time you get a few knights online you should be able to cruise through the rest of the game.

Should end up with a build like this:

2-4 Troll (witch doctor / batrider, warlord if you can get him + shaman if you have enough room and want the full alliance bonus)
    4-6 Knight (Bat/Chaos/Abaddon/Omni/Luna/Dragon)

    and optionally:

2 Warlock (easy to pick up since you'll have one from witch doctor - can go Shadow Fiend here if you passed on Chaos Knight, or Disruptor/Necrophos)
2 Heartless (easy to pick up since you'll have one from Abaddon - Pudge/Necrophos/Drow all work here)
2 Dragon (drop in Puck or Viper to pair with Dragon Knight)

as long as you stack the knight units up together, it doesn't matter all that much where they're positioned. Can move them up against ranged comps or back against melee/aoe comps. The important thing is to make sure the knights stay together.

Yeah, that's pretty much my most consistent strat if I can pull it off (Knight/Troll), but most of my games I swear have at least 2 other people going Knights. I get it, it's a nice dad build. Reliable and doesn't require a lot of quick thinking.

Anytime I don't see only one other Knight dude or less I pretty much always go that route lol

u should play it for more than 2 mins then and become uber then tell me all ur secrets.

the game does a shit job explaining itself in its shit tutorial, but what i figured out was that at it's core it's just picking a lineup that can crush ur enemy.

the simplest mechanic is just obtaining 3 units of the same type which greatly beefs up the power of that unit as it levels from a level 1 to level 2 unit. if you join 3 level 2 units, you get a p powerful 3-star unit.

you have to make tradeoffs though because your staging area where you collect units is limited in size, so u have to decide between trying to make beefy 3 star units or getting a lot of 2 star units staged.

on top of that, groups of units synergize together in alliances.... so like having 3 or 6 different types of mages all active will reduce the magic resistance of your opponent which can be pretty devastating. or having 6 knights grants you some ridiculous defense bonus. and some alliances are really easy, like just 2 troll units together give everyone a small speed boost. that sort of thing.

Is it supposed to take like 10 fucking minutes to get into a single ranked match during primetime?

tbh I don't give two shits about my ranked and I kinda like playing w/random shitty scrub ppl because it makes me feel better, but still on the rare occasion I want to try ranked that shit is way too long to get into a game.

On the plus side, my first ranked match since they implemented the casual/ranked split was a great success with Utumno's Patented Dad Build as detailed by @Sear

It was even more gratifying because someone else was going for a similar 6/4 knight/troll build but mine was better lol

Critique my build Sear tell me what I could have done better.

p.s. I got relatively shit items mostly but that heartless item is pretty great

I got nothing - that's a killer comp. Hard to do much better than that.

What's getting kinda annoying is how often I see Knights/Trolls nowadays. This one was a surprise win though, I was just trying to do a summoning quest.

So Terrorblade is a must have in any build and if ya get a Big-Time Contract all you really need to do is make sure Warlock dies first and fast (easy to do) and the rest of your team tanks for TB while he cleans house.

My luckiest game to date. I was a single 2 star Pudge away from having all 3's.

I started out with Riots version but it was so buggy it annoyed me. I also like that Steam offers clear and free paths for rewards, Riot seemed to immediately try to monetize everything. May go back once I unlock everything on Underlords.
