I can't remember the thread it was in and I'm lazy so I'm starting a new one.

I'm nearing the end of Book 4. I think one or two of you said after this it won't be worth it finishing the series right? Just double-checking... will probably finish in the next day or two and if consensus is that the series goes to shit, I'll just read wikipedia summaries or some shit to figure out how it plays out.

p.s. so far I'd say 2nd book (esp. all the stuff when he first starts portal travelling w/Eddie) and 4th book (one big long flashback to Roland's time as a gunslinging teenager) have been best. I'm real close to the end and I'm already sad because Steven King is doing that nice writer's trick of keeping the plot upbeat and hopeful despite you knowing as a reader, that only Roland makes it out alive (probably - don't tell me if I'm wrong).

Also his descriptions of Rhea the Witch are so gnarly I want to gag every time I think about it too much.

Books 5-7 were (mostly) compete garbage

If you read the new prints of the first three it may mesh better, I dunno, but even then they’d still terrible

The last Dark Tower book is by far the best. Make sure to read them all. It will totally pay off in the end.

Wait, I'm confused now... which one do you think is the best one to stop at?

I think Blaine was all in book 3 and tbh I sorta thought the train thing was kinda meh (until near the end when it actually got pretty suspenseful). Wasn't bad really, but I def liked books 2 and 4 best.

I didn't care for 5 & 6 and found them to be a chore to get through at times, but 7 was better. It's completely overindulgent and overstuffed (tbh it's just kind of dumb in general), but I did like the ending.

I'd try Wolves of the Calla and see if you can get past the first 100-200 pages or so without getting bored or turned off by the tonal shift.

I agree with the first paragraph

7 is the best of the worst and the ending isn’t bad all things considered

Re: the last paragraph, Honestly I would expect Utumno to not be bothered—if he even notices the difference—by the last three books, based on his hand-wringy taste in other media

King's post-accident writing style just seems so noticeably different to me. On top of that, the plot and pacing of Wolves of the Calla is just kind of fucking weird. To me it felt like there was a book missing in between 4 and 5 (and I know he literally wrote a 4.5 book, but it doesn't bridge the two).

There are people who hate 4 and love 5 though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That is fucking unfathomable to me

But then I read book 4 when I was like 16 or 17 iirc. But even if my love for book 4 is misplaced, anyone loving 5 is by itself pretty unfathomable to me

Books 5-7 were so different he literally had to reprint the first book (if not all three of the first books, but I’m only certain about the first one) in order to make it make sense

Also, I didn’t know there was a book 4.5 (was it a graphic novel or something?) but I doubt I’ll ever read it

It actually makes sense thematically that it went there but there’s just no way to do that without it being masturbatory and it’s frankly difficult to read through I agree
