I'm moving out to the Malibu area at the end of the month. I may only be out there for as little as three months, or as much as a year, but I'd prefer to live alone if it's at all possible.

Anyone familiar with the area? I'm going to be making ~65K take-home if I stay the year (before state taxes, anyway). That's enough that I could live pretty comfortably in most places I've lived previously, but my mental image of Malibu is shallow, super-wealthy, blonde people sun-bathing and judging each other, so I don't know if it's enough to scrape a living there at all, let alone without room mates.

But I don't know anything at all about the area so I don't want to try to live in a cheaper area nearby and end up somewhere where I don't feel safe walking my dog

I have a relocation package, so I'll have two weeks to figure it out once I get out there, but it'd be good to know where to start looking now

    Anyone got any pointers?

I don't think I could have lived in Malibu in the 90's for that pay range.

malibu is a super wealthy area in general.

may have better luck finding something more affordable in santa monica which isn’t too far away.

Santa Monica isn't much cheaper. I paid $2200/mo for a tiny studio there. I'd say the commute on PCH isn't too awful, but you can easily get gridlocked there for hours on the weekends when everyone in the metroplex wants to go to the beach. West LA is adjacent to Santa Monica and cheaper without being too ghetto, but it'll tack on an extra 10 minutes to a 30+ minute commute.

I'd look at Thousand Oaks. It's also not going to be cheap (r u noticing a pattern here?), but you might find something under 2k. It will also be a 25-30 minute commute on a good day.

If you want to save a decent % of your take-home, you need to share a place with roommates. I made around the same amount and didn't want roommates + was fine with paying extra to avoid spending so much time in my car. So it is totally possible to do that - you just won't be putting much into savings.

I would not compare santa monica to malibu

not even close, a 1 bedroom in malibu is like 4k.

I've lived in LA my entire life outside when I lived in San diego, you want to look at somewhere like agoura hills, malibu is about twice as expensive as calabasas/santa monica, it's the same house median price as beverly hills with far less affordable housing

As everyone else has already said you aren't going to be able to pay them Malibu prices on that salary.

You will have to commute like the rest of us suckers. Learn to ride a motorcycle and get a cheap one. I'm currently commuting 76 miles one way for work until I can sell my house. It takes 3 hours by car or 1-1.5 hours lane splitting.

Newbury Park/Thousand Oaks/Westlake you can find stuff for 1500ish. Oxnard and Camarillo will also be within that price range.

Google maps has a traffic calculator on it, you can set the time you wish to arrive at your destination and it will give you an estimated time with normal traffic. Check it out
