This gets 4 out of 5 Benedict Cumberbatches, and I'm tempted to give it 5.

Synopsis: a young programmer starts to question reality when he adapts a mad writer's fantasy novel into a video game.

It's literally a Choose Your Own Adventure movie (using your remote), which seems a little gimmicky at first but also perfectly suits the narrative.

I ate up the game development stuff, with some of it hitting close to home (being "in the hole", choosing to work alone vs on a team with restrictions, Tangerine Dream as coding music, etc). The 1980's setting and horror undertones are right up my alley too, so YMMV with how much you enjoy all that.

For any path chosen, it explores the themes of multiple timelines & parallel universes, the stress of programming, and dissociative psychology. My only major criticism is that I wish it did a little more than just present different outcomes. As interesting as some of them are, the protagonist seems doomed to varying degrees of unsatisfactory fates. Most are appreciably cheeky or meta, but feel like abrupt cliffhangers to an unfinished story (which may have been intentional). I just think they could have done more with it, after setting up some emotional tentpoles and hinting at deeper mythology.

I also really wanted this tormented game programmer to get at least one happy ending, but he never does.

the first ending I got was him dying in the therapist chair

I didn’t realize it was interactive, so watched it pick all the default choices, then cycle back dozens of times and replay different paths over and over and over. I thought the first replay was a neat twist, but was getting sick of it after it kept happening. At around 2.5 hour mark, having seen 10+ different endings and the “Exit to credits” prompt 10+ times, I realized I should have been picking options the whole time. I probably would have liked it a lot better if I knew that from the beginning.

Since it’s Black Mirror, it’s crammed with Easter egg references to other episodes. I saw a site listing dozens of them that have been found so far, including some crazy chain involving an encoded QR code for a fake website for the software company. That shit has got to be a blast to dream up.

Just watched a few timelines, but left some to see where the wife makes her choices. Was hoping there would be at least one satisfying ending since I didn't get any, but I guess there won't be :(

Other than that I loved the ... movie? for same reasons as OP. Struck a lot of familiar chords of shit that i'm into. (programming, game dev, sciencey shit with the multiple timelines & free will)

it was great but i also felt like the story ended about halfway through. I only did one timeline, so it's possible i just picked the shortest one.

I really enjoyed the LSD trip in the other programmer's apartment.

It was good and different. I did the same thing as @Jackpanel and probably not until the like 3rd or 4th time it popped up did I realize it was interactive.

I watched for little over an hour and did kind of just lose interest, was entertaining and at first like 'ohh cool im gonna see all the different ways this can play out' but pretty quickly was like 'ehh, ok, that's enough' and didnt get through too much.

Worth checking out. Kind of a cool nerdy story with a cool amount of retro easter eggs just not a lot of substance beyond the nifty interactive story.

I am curious if there is a sequence of choices you can make to take you to some really bizarre/easter egg kind of scene considering they do like to get pretty deep with the shows meta.

Are you guys braindead? Did you not see the demo / introduction that tells you that's gonna happen? And prompts you "do you understand?" And makes you click yes or no like a video game introduction? Did someone else skip this for you? Did you not say hmmm wait a sec I guess I should pick an option while they were on the screen for 20 seconds at a time?

Someone else is using your netflix! Once this is started it is hard to navigate around (and demo/intro won't appear). Anyway... I ... wish you guys would have understood the choices lol. Please tell me you made Colin jump and saw Pax.

I didn’t get the demo or intro either. The first time there was a choice presented, it was for which breakfast cereal to eat.

    spoiler post

people saying there was no satisfying ending didn't try hard enough--there are at least two different satisfying endings and a lot of minor variations of one of the two

I'm pretty sure I saw pretty much every possible ending. There are a surprising number of choices I got to make twice just by picking the left option every time except when it would get me stuck in a loop. I fucked up dialing the psychiatrist's number and there was no backspace, though, so I guess I'm going to have to play through again to see what happens when you get through. I have a feeling the remaining variations from certain choices I didn't get a second chance at (like I never declined the acid, never picked the other breakfast cereal, etc) is probably minor enough that I'm not going to spend the, like, 8 hours it'd take to try each of them both ways

wasn't good, most tv and movies are not good

that is a fact that will be remembered by our successors in the future who abandoned this form of entertainment

y did you not like it?

Bird Box was a waste of 2 hours, if anyone was thinking "this has to be more than a low-rent version of A Quiet Place, since 92384 million people watched it". I'll save you the trouble: it's not. It's cheesy and will just make you want to watch a better movie with John Malkovich in it.
