In the old man thread, Ageless said he thought caffeine from energy drinks was different than caffeine from coffee. Which I agree with.

So this thread is about how you get your caffeine, and why. I'm secretly hoping for exotic ideas that will make my life better, but I'll settle for shitty banter for a handful of posts until we get bored.

This is probably a splamalot thread. But what's done is done.

When it really matters, all of them combined.
I'm not sure if energy drinks really are more than caff + sugar, I've always wondered this myself. Don't underestimate the (short-term) effect of sugar though.

I don’t think it’s the caffeine in energy drinks that’s “different”, it’s probably just other ingredients (sugar?) that give you more of a rush followed by a crash. Coffee/tea is probably the best way to get caffeine outside of just taking straight up tablets in terms of minimizing your exposure to other harmful shit.

Get your caffeine in the morning if you need it. I wouldn’t consume it 2pm or so as it has a half life of 6 hours and can keep you up longer than you should/want to be.

Sleeping 8+ hours daily is normal, as is napping for ~30 minutes in the early afternoon, and likely even necessary for most people.

Alcohol (and any sleeping pills outside of melatonin or placebo meds) degrades sleep quality

Chad Redley doesn't take any type of caffeine. But I do drink a shit load of water and eat melatonin by the fist full (when working nights). Being on night shift is slowly killing me. I've been on vacation for 3+ weeks with a week of training starting it all. Being back on a normal schedule makes me realize just how shitty night shift makes you feel.

I only drink sugar free energy drinks.

I'm pretty sure the difference is the vitamin B and maybe the Taurine or whatever other crazy shit they put in there, but mostly the vitamin B, would be my guess.

Maybe try out rooibos or yerba matte?

I still think less is more. I drove from Massachusetts to SW Florida on two spaced out and slowly sipped cups of iced coffee last week, and after being up from ~9AM to 5PM, when I hit the road. Contrast that with my mid-20s approach of slamming an energy drink and then stopping for more energy drinks every couple of hours (+ water, water is important), which about half the time would see me through my full journey and the other half would see me nodding off to the point of being forced to pull over and sleep in my car for a few hours

Voted Synth unironically because he brought the most drama.

Energy drinks are awful for you. If you're drinking the sugared versions, it's even worse.

I've never felt like any form of caffeine is particularly good for performance. You just end up as a jittery tweaker for a few hours, then crash a couple hours later and repeat the process bc ur brain is now addicted to it.

If you really have to shorten your lifespan by pulling 14 hour workdays in your 30's, go get your Concerta or Ritalin like a normal white yuppie.

I drink 12-16oz of black coffee twice a day. I regret it every time I try pushing the limits of that (e.g., drinking a venti from Starbucks that has 400mg of caffeine in it) under the assumption that it will help me get more shit done.

Don't take adderal if you're not fine trading your memory and a fully functioning brain for constant happiness, though.

If I put in ~a week between energy drinks I can get a pretty good run of high productivity (or just motivation to play guitar for a few hours on my day off or something) out of them

But at this point in life if I drink them on consecutive days by the third day it’s just staying off narcolepsy with no real benefit to energy over normal levels

Cold brew coffee is a little gentler but even that can be a quick-up-and-crash cycle if I order a huge one or slam it

I really think the trick is just not to chase the dragon too far. If you need to go for a long time get a venti iced coffee at Starbucks and string it out

I got on the cold brew reason for a time, I even bought a toddy vat and was brewing pitchers to freeze. My addictive personality let me get to the point where I was doing 64oz undiluted per day before I made a change. I switched to tea in the mornings and eventually fell off of that to where I'm good without now. I do enjoy the occasional dirty chai, and if my gf wants to do something late night, I'll still occasionally augment with a red bull, but these have become treats more than foundations.

I just rounded 4.5 years alcohol free, so chalk another up for weed + supplemental caffeine.

Voted for Zedd because birds of a feather.

Can't be any worse than thethe w slavery at my repugnant job. At least you days you get to retire early.

I'm actually curious what you mean by this. Are you saying that being on adderall reduces your memory and brain capacity over time?

tbh even for Concerta I've found similarity with this.

My doctor recently asked me why I almost went a year between Concerta refills. I told him I only use it for work, and I try to use it as little as possible. I mean even if I took it every weekday it would have clear benefits, but I've found if I only take it 2 or 3 times a week, I can crush work during those days, and still be somewhat functional on the other days (particularly if I work from home on the off days where there is less chatter/distraction around me).

I've had one sitting in my fridge for the past year that I'll have to try at some point.

I remember hating them. The effect of the taurine/b12/etc just seemed like adding more caffeine on top of caffeine to me, in a chemical sickly sweet carbonated liquid form.

Taking in more caffeine than my baseline just results in heart-pounding anxiety for me that adversely affects on my productivity because I'm too tweaked out to calmly focus on anything. It's a nasty feeling.

I did get a nice performance boost from Ritalin (which is chemically more similar to cocaine than amphetamine), but it's not something I wanted to stay on for an extended period of time.
