Amazon throws their hat into the game dev/engine market. Bit of a surprise for me, as I didn't even know they were planning on this.

    http://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/
    http://kotaku.com/amazon-releases-its-own-game-engine-for-free-1757995787

It uses CryEngine, and some proprietary visual scripting which is based on (I think) C++ and Lua.

0% chance I'll use this for my game - already way too committed to Unity plus it doesn't fit my game's needs. But this might be worth a look if you're starting fresh or planning on using AWS heavily.

Super excited about this! I work directly with these guys and the GameLift guys every day. Scripting isn't really proprietary it's just Lua/C++. Cloud Canvas is more of a visual tool for dragging around and connecting game play flows that gets translated into lua. I assume that's what you're refrencing.

Obviously this is just the start of many big things to come from AGS!

    yeah, I'm all for it

More competition = even more incentive for Unity and UE to raise the bar higher.

Daliak what do you do? If you don't mind me asking.

And yeah I meant the visual scripting tool being proprietary. I'm sure most devs will skip that and just code C++/Lua the normal way.

I work on the AWS side of Amazon Game Studios and I'm a software engineer. I would love to brag in detail about the cool stuff I'm working on, but I just can't sorry!

    *edit (and shameless plug)*

You could say my job description is as follows:

this is my only real reaction. i haven't dipped my hands in Unity for a while, but i probably will again sometime. anything that makes that market at once better priced and more diverse, without causing it to sacrifice features, has my support (though whether and when open markets really do this...)

also i've always thought it was weird how touchy a subject income/jobs can be in the US. kinda random, but searyx's polite reticence to put daliak on the spot reminded me of it. i have a pal whose whole family is like that

i think our culture'd be fundamentally better'd if people weren't such bitches about talking about that kinda thing

Also, another great Easter Egg with the Lumber Yard and AWS is AWS updated their Terms of Service with the new product launch:

My first impression of Lumberyard is that it looks like a weaker version of Unity or UE4.

Unity is hard to compete with because of the tons of support it has in its development and community.

But you gotta start somewhere. For it's first release, it doesn't look too bad, just not as equipped as the guys that have been doing it for a decade.

This is all just speculation though from a little bit of reading & looking at screenshots. It looks like it may have some native support / strengths that Unity and UE4 don't have in regards to AWS integration (and other Amazon services obviously) and Twitch integration.

I'll have to download it soon and play around with it a bit. I like the fact that it uses CryEngine and C++.

Another good thing is we don't collect any royalties from profit like the other engines. Also this platform is for medium to large scale game companies.

We're just after them using aws for infrastructure

I didn't realize Unity collected royalties.

I'd love to check it out if I get a chance.

I didn't think I read anything about that.

Whoever ends up giving it a good run through definitely post your thoughts.

Guess I was saying if the game does well, you don't have to pay anything. Unity requires you to buy pro edition after 100k in sales
