Anyone else getting a lot of notifications from Signal from conspiracy-minded and likely-Trumpist acquaintances joining? I'm guessing with Parler gone and twitter banning people, the rats are moving underground. Will be interesting to see if they manage to coordinate more insurgency via signal/email. Glad I don't live in DC.
There needs to be a national holiday where every year we impeach Trump as a tradition even after when he's thrown out of office, just a reminder to the country on what a colossal loser he was.
j/k pal Think of Signal as text messaging but with massive, massive emphasis on privacy. Everything that Signal does is built around the concept of encryption and privacy. Like you lose your signal credentials and your shit is gone forever. Stuff only lives on your device, and temporarily goes through their servers (and then gets deleted). It's fantastic if you don't want government intruding on your privacy. Also fantastic for terrorists, pedos, activists in oppressive regimes, etc for all the obvious reasons.
is that just how they sell it or is it actually private? i find it hard to believe that anything is truly private these days also, i am totally a boomer when it comes to certain technologies. i never used snapchat or tiktok, i barely ever use phone apps, i still have an iphone 6, i never used online dating, i have never used instagram, etc. but i also play video games all the time and spend 75% of my day on the computer maybe you are the true millennial utumno
I’m right there with you baneden. You/ we missed absolutely nothing with tik tok the craze is already over
From a technology perspective, Signal seems pretty damn legit to me. Telegram is the other platform that bills itself as intensely privacy-focused but I've heard there are more flaws in their implementation (still a million times better than say, relying on txts or facebook messenger or some shit like that). Of course if you want to get super-paranoid, sure... even though Signal is open-sourced and the code is open to examination by anyone with proficiency, the actual people running the servers might run some super-clever alternate code instead, but that gets into the trust-nothing-you-didn't-build-yourself-from-scratch levels of paranoia. If I were some dissident in China or Russia or some shit and wanted to communicate privately w/a lot of people I'd almost certainly opt for Signal.
Signal has security creds, but you can't be 100% sure about anything if you are of interest to state actors. For all other purposes it's likely safe though.
I saw a blurb about Elon tweeting “use Signal” and it blowing up the stock of some unrelated medical device accidentally, but I didn’t think about the tweet in the context of everything going on at the time God fuck that guy
