Anyone play this? I just picked up a couple copies for me and the wife. So far the visuals exceed vanguard and the engine runs alot better too. The quest system reminds me of WoW and the gameplay reminds me of EQ. So far so good.

Not entirely true. You can play as a "monster" after you level a regular character to lvl 10. You attack players in non-safe zones and you level/gain skills by killing players. Not sure about PVE content if any for monsters. I never played the game, but there are definetly people who only play as monsters. http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=261475

I remember in EQ they did something similar for a day, and that was enjoyable.

I started to play Lotro again. I am enjoying it so far. Right now I am traveling to different areas just to see what everything looks like. The visuals are just stunning in some places. I have been taking screenshots in high quality settings. I'll post some later.

Yeah, I almost wanted to try it just so I can explore around and see what everything looks like. It would be cool if it was a 2 team PVP server and players effected the games zones and NPC charactes permanently and you could be on the evil team and attack and kill Gandalf (well make him level 80 and toughest mob in game on good team) and destroy the Shire permanently.

I created a gallery for my screenshots on my domain. You can see them at http://elysium-guild.net/lotrgallery/index.phpThe screenshots save in jpg format instead of bmp for full quality. I'll have to use another program to get them saved in bmp format. But in game settings are turned all the way up with direct 11 (windows 7) enabled. I'm still kinda of traveling around where I can without getting killed. The bad part is you have to run to where the horse trainers are to get new ways of moving safely between areas.

the graphics look ok, not as amazing as you made them sound. good for an mmo, though, since they generally dumb down graphics to reach a broader audience of machine capability.

I finally decided to do some trade skills. I chose armorer. It includes being a metal smith for heavy armors and shields, a prospector (mining for ore), and a tailor for light and medium armors. That is the nice thing about this game, it limits you on how many trade skills you can do on one character so it makes tradeskillers a bit more desired. So far I am making more money doing this than anything I have done in the game so far. The mining system is similar to WoW's except you don't skill up on mining. You skill up by smelting and making the armor itself in tiers. Once you achieve a certain tier, you then can master that tier and gain titles based upon those tiers.
You can buy a pick axe on the auction house that gives you a critical chance of getting more ore from a mine. Also can buy a smithing hammer that gives you a critical chance of smelting more bars from ore.
So far the look of the armor doesn't impress me at lower levels, at higher levels (45+) the armor becomes more detailed and actually looks very nice and weapons have particle effects.
You can buy a horse at level 20. It's a bit faster than you can run so that is helpful in runs where you don't have a horse master near (like WoW's griffon travel system).

I have a lifetime membership (bought it when the game first came out).
Played for almost a year but quit due to time scarcity. Good game though, quite solid, and I'm enough of a LOTR geek to really enjoy just traversing middle earth.
May play again in the future since I'll always have that option so long as Turbine sticks around.

downloading the trial out of boredom waiting on other games to come out. worth a shot - it was either this or revisit age of conan and see how that's progressed over the years. I imagine without pvp I'll just get bored.

Now that the game is going F2P, what do you get for buying a lifetime membership?

Now that the game is going F2P, what do you get for buying a lifetime membership? Dungeons & Dragons is free to play too which I did read up when it happened..... I don't know how LoTR works but I assume it's similar: lifetime membership gets all dungeons/adventure packs/intances free, where as some who plays free has to buy some of the "bonus" zones (which probably has some of the best loot). Plus extra character slots, certain bonus/special races, a few extra stat bonuses, etc etc. F2P is a good way to get people hooked then have them buy points to purchase things like bonus EXP, potions, buffs, better loot, NPC help, etc etc. The key is getting them "hooked".
