AMD Radeon RX 480 4G card
    Most up to date drivers.

A few days ago I come home and the PC is in an error state and there are big vertical bars on the screen, and the rest of the screen is distorted. I try rebooting but it keeps booting to windows boot manager and won't go past it, still having the vertical bars.

I pull the GPU, and reseat it and it seems to be back to normal. However when I start gaming with say PUBG the screen would flicker every once in a while, and I thought maybe there's something wrong.

Yesterday I'm playing PUBG and the screen is flickering more than normal, and once it flickered bad and made a feedback noise in my headset. I get down to the final 3 players and the screen goes completely grey, then completely red, and the PC crashes.

This morning I pulled the GPU and took it completely apart to make sure that like the fan was not clogged up with something, or something on the heat sink. The only thing I could say is the smear of Arctic Silver was mostly around the edges so I attempted to smooth it out a bit, other than that everything looked good, no visible signs of damage.

Now I've powered it back up and so far it's fine, but i haven't attempted to run a game with it. I was going to take a look at some PC monitoring tools and see if maybe it's overheating or something.

My thoughts are that the GPU is failing, but I don't understand why reseating the card would temporarily fix the issue.

    PC spec:
    HP Omen 880
AMD 3.15 engineer sample - Liquid cooled
    AMD Radeon RX 480 4G
    16GB DDR4
    WD Green SSD 240GB
    1TB 7200RPM SATA

Oh, and from some of the googling I read something that sort of makes sense. When you're gaming the board heats up and expands. This changes electrical connectivity in a poorly seated card and causes the issue. However if that were the case why does it continue to have the issue once the box has cooled down? I just reseated it now and I'm a little scared of jumping on a game to see.

Ok so some adjustments and things I've noticed. I don't recall during gameplay even when running at 100fps that the fans would come on or be very loud. This started making me think maybe the fan connection was broken, or something in the software was keeping the fans from coming on. I'm not sure if something was installed in this PC because it was a demo to make it quieter, but it definitely could be the case, although that sort of wouldn't make sense if you're demoing a game and you don't have the fans running it better be a quick demo. Anyway....I downloaded MSI Afterburner and set a really conservative fan profile so that the fans come on at quite low temps. It's louder to play, but I wear headphones so I don't care. The highest the temp got while playing PUBG today was 72, no flickering, performance was awesome. I'm not holding my breath though because I thought I had it fixed before, but it does seem to be a heat related issue.

Ok so I just started up another game and the screen started flickering so I shut it down so I don't have to deal with reseating it again. I'm stumped. It runs absolutely fine and then it starts flickering and I'm not sure why. You'd think if the GPU was failing it would come with a lot of heat.

Is this thread just an elaborate cover story for losing another duel to Amuk?

Needed a display port cable anyway, might as well pay double for both items at my favorite rip off store Best Buy.
