This isn't out of the ordinary, even in relatively wealthy cities. Poor people tend to have more children, and each child you have increases the likelihood your children would be on that. Plus, has she looked up what the requirements are for that? It might not be as dirt poor as you'd think.

I'm sure its not too horrible but we do live in an incredibly poor rural town with not many jobs other than in the few plants like ACME brick, or Caterpillar. or Dairy Queen.

Tech Heads / Re: Razer Blade Stealth
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:49:42 AM »
I have owned quite a few razer products. Ive had several mice, keyboards, and headphones.

I will never buy another razer product.

Main reason: Software. Razer is absolutely horrible at fixing software bugs or upgrading their software. I had a $250 Razer Blackwidow keyboard (kind with a LCD touchscreen with loadable apps and shit) and i had it for about 3 months and after that i never could use anything related to the software for about 2 years after that. all those patches and they never fixed it. they just left the product dead in the water. I eventually replaced it. My current mouse is still a razer. it is one of the wireless ones that you can plug in to keep using it if your battery dies. While plugged in half the time the mouse shoots around the screen on its own. so i HAVE to use it in wireless mode with only a 10ish hour battery life (using it or not!)

In short: I cant even imagine if they built me an entire computer and i had to deal with their drivers and all of that other shit for EVERYTHING. it would kill me.

I use an FL Esports mechanical with cherry MX switches. i love typing on it. the only negative really is that its a lot louder than any other crap keyboard. so if wife is asleep she will wake up when i get super angsty at a meanie pker.

I also ordered the shit to put together an ErgoDox (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/infinity-ergodox) to seriously nerd out.

The orion area is huge. the nebula on the right is several times bigger than a full moon. Its actually easier with the less zoomy lenses because the stars are moving and while doing long exposures everything will start to streak. I think i had 180 or so 30 second exposures and use those to average out the fucked up bits. I had a hard time processing this one in photoshop because im so rusty. Someone who is good can get all kinds of color to come out.

Synth's Book Club / The Fold - Peter Clines
« on: December 16, 2015, 06:35:16 PM »
Just finished this. I really liked it. Enough to purchase another book by the author "14". science fiction kind of similar to a detective story with a hint of bad shit gonna happen.

Quote
STEP INTO THE FOLD.
IT’S PERFECTLY SAFE.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn’t much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he’s content with his quiet and peaceful existence.

That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve: far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to “fold” dimensions, it shrinks distances so that a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step.

The invention promises to make mankind’s dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the Door is completely safe.

Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isn’t quite what it seems—and that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret.

As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear there’s only one answer that makes sense. And if he’s right, it may only be a matter of time before the project destroys…everything.

A cunningly inventive mystery featuring a hero worthy of Sherlock Holmes and a terrifying final twist you’ll never see coming, The Fold is that rarest of things: a genuinely page-turning science-fiction thriller. Step inside its pages and learn why author Peter Clines has already won legions of loyal fans.

realistically, a guild would raise funds and purchase a guild ship (think large destroyer with all kinds of battle stations and a landing bay with tons of fighter jets parked inside) and everyone has a role to play. I've already seen guilds doing this. You cant buy the $2500 ship and just fly it around by yourself. As is, in the current alpha release, even flying the smaller "fire fly" style ships around by yourself isnt a greeaat idea. I mean you can get by, but your not able to defend yourself or attack others that well.

the current state of the game is kind of buggy. You fly around in a decently sized area of space with a few planets and a few dozen stations. exploring them and fighting other players is pretty fun. I've really enjoyed grouping up with others and sneaking into the space station that assault rifles are stored in. Once you have one of those you can fly around and visit other stations scouting for players to ruthlessly gun down. Flying around a space station in my space suit is especially enjoyable. space ship battles are pretty intense. the audio and visual graphics are completely amazing. things are just generally beautiful in the game.

$45 gets you the basic starter package. a ship with a couple of guns that will allow you to cruise at .2 light speed. Sometimes it goes on sale for $30. it also gets you full access and whatnot.

$200 gets you a firefly style ship. cargo bay. a docked fighter jet. and room for 4 of your pals to join you and help.

If you love science fiction shit, this game is going to be the biggest game for that genre to date.

I have only seen interstellar on shrooms so I like to think of it as a very epic musical score with insane visuals to go along with it. Matt Damon seemed pretty reasonable in it. But Matthew McConaughey scared the shit out of me. His face was so weird looking.
